Passengers Can Make Mobile Phone Call in-Flight during the Session of 2010 World Expo
In order to serve the visitors of 2010 Shanghai world Expo, China Eastern Airlines(CEA) recently consulted with China Mobile Communication Company(CMCC). Both parties planned to establish flights information platform. During the session of 2010 Shanghai World Expo, CMCC will allow the passengers of CEA to make mobile phone call and to go online in its flights.
These two groups put forward elementary cooperative vision, which is to establish new generation of flight information platform. Both sides also planned to cooperate on mobile phone communication and Internet service in flight.
But at present, both sides have not yet issued a formal framework for cooperation. If they want to realize mobile phone communication in flight, they should solve not only the necessary technical problems but also get approvals from Civil Aviation Administration of China and related departments from airports. But CEA said that in addition to mobile phone communication and Internet operation, it would cooperate with CMCC in many areas. Currently, all of the businesses are in discussion.
At present, in Chinese domestic airlines, only several airlines like Shenzhen airlines can provide in-flight mobile phone and Internet service. In its planes, Shenzhen airline installed some electronic devices provided by OnAir Company. These devices include GSM in-flight mobile communication device, satellite communication components, antenna and so on. Passengers can freely make mobile phone call, send messages, log in Internet and chat online through these devices. The installation fee for each plane is RMB 4.5 million yuan. The high cost and various procedures make many airlines halt on this business.
