Does the Hydrofoil still cross the English Channel as a passenger ferry?

Im booking a trip to Europe and was wondering if the Hydrofoil is still in use. Ive tried to search for myself, but cant seem to find any transportation website that lead me to it. Ive found the obvious, ferries, chunnel and planes, but I was curious if they still run the Hydrofoil.

Also, we’re looking at flying from the US to London Gatwick, then getting over to Amsterdam, Brussels and end in Paris. I’ve seen cheap flights inter-Europe to Prague as well as Rome. Im booking 14 days hoping that will be enough to see what I can. Also if anyone could recommend decent hotels, not cheap roach motels but not expensive ones either. Any European travel site recommendations will be welcome as well. I know all the American ones, so dont suggest Travelocity, Orbitz, Priceline, Hotwire or any others.

I worked for an airline in the US, so I know how to get around that, just need hotel suggestions and other forms of transportation within Europe.

Thanks!

No, the Hydrofoil was pulled a long time ago and more recently the Hovercraft was pulled as well due to cost reasons as usual.

Think about taking Eurostar between London and Paris / Brussels – its much quicker than the ferry since you are limited to time.

Also try Easyjet and Ryanair for low cost fares from London Stanstead and London Luton

try www.lastminute.com or www.laterooms.com (doesnt need to be last minute booking incidently)

Also try http://www.hotelformule1.com/formule1/index.html for cheap hotels across europe and www.easyhotel.com for cheap hotel in London.

Europe or Round the World?

I’m going to go away for about 2 months travelling alone on a gap year. I live in the UK. I can either choose to do Dubai, Singapore, Oz (Sydney, travel to Melbourne), NZ, (Christchurch and Auckland) and LA or travel round Europe with Interrail. Europe will be about £1000 cheaper (flights come to around £1300 for RTW). Europe would include Spain (Barcelona, Madrid), France, Sweden (Stockholm), Croatia, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Greece. I have the money for both but don’t want to throw it away. Backpacking alone is common but sounds like it could be dodgy so that may be a plus for doing the cheaper option.

europe, its cheaper, closer together!

Can you recommend a cheap flight to Amsterdam from Italy (Rome-Pisa-Florence)?

I live in Florence, but I can take a train to Pisa or Rome.
I found at KLM for 168 euros, still expensive. The dates are January 10/2008 to 13/2008.

Thanks a lot;

AP

This is a good site for identifying budget airlines that fly between a given pair of cities. http://www.whichbudget.com/

Your best bet right now is to take Ryanair from Pisa to Eindhoven and catch the traqin into Amsterdam. On your dates the fares including taxes and fees come to 62.57 euro round trip. http://www.bookryanair.com/skylights/cgi-bin/skylights.cgi

I go to Amsterdam frequently and use Transavia from Verona, Bergamo, or Treviso depending on which has the best deal. About a month ago, I flew from Bergamo for 90 euro round trip. Obviously, it’s usually better to book as early as possible to get the best deals. http://www.transavia.com/en

The cheapest option on your dates is from Milan Orio del Serio (ie, Bergamo) – there are two flights per day between Bergamo and Amsterdam for 133.56 euro. Even with the train tickets, the Ryan air flight will be somewhat cheaper.

Sydney – City to Sea

Sydney just mentioned the word and people all over the world see the shining white sails of the Sydney Opera House, and the steely grey arch of the Harbour Bridge. Kangaroos and Koalas aren’t far behind. But there is more to Sydney than cute marsupials and iconic arches. Sydney is the gateway to Australia for most visitors and from the first G’day you will feel at home. On the drive from the airport you will notice golf courses, parkland, residential developments, and, looming large in the taxi or Limo windscreen, a cluster of skyscrapers, standing tall and proud.

Once ensconced in your luxury hotel, go exploring the city streets. Weekdays they are busy, but you will not find the harried crowds of New York or chaotic bustle of Paris or Rome. There is room to move in Sydney, and locals will only be too pleased to give you directions or advise on what to do and see. Compared to other cities, Sydney is relaxed, vibrant, and young lady content in her skin. The City has it all-beautiful beaches, glorious National Parks in the shadows of the CBD, cutting – edge fashion, fantastic shopping and all the facilities, activities and accommodation any visitor could hope for. From most city hotels around the CBD, there will be a view or glimpse of the body of water that is Sydney’s pride and joy. Sydney Harbour is the star in most visitors’ photo album.

They will take photos of the glistening blue water from every possible angle-from aircraft on scenic flights, from Skywalk and the Bridge climb, from Ferries or yachts, or from foreshores. It would be a fairly safe bet that no first time visitor would leave Sydney without at least a photo of the harbour safely tucked away on a memory card or roll of film. Sydney seaplanes (visit www.seaplanes.com.au) and Sydney by seaplane (www.sydneybyseaplane.com.au) are two of the companies conducting scenic flights and from the moment you take off you will be absolutely mesmerised by the fantastic sights. The coastline’s rugged cliffs and golden beaches, the city skyline, the harbour bridge, Opera House and the distant blue of the mountains are spread out before you in a stream of beauty. These companies also offer combination fly dine tours, with the excitement of touching down on water sure to be a highlight. If sailing is your choice, why not hire your own charter yacht and explore the harbour at you own pace, or participate in a scheduled sail. The main player in this field is Sydney by Sail (www.sydneybysail.com) at Darling Harbour, with a fleet of luxury Hunter yachts and an innovative range of charter and leisure activities.

It is one of Sydney’s charms that you can be in the middle of George Street in the city one minute, and can be strolling through beautiful bushland before the hour is out. Discover the past at the Rocks including the historic pubs. Enjoy the shopping, galleries, museums and fine dining in central Sydney or immerse yourself in the wonderful waterways of Sydney harbour – there is so much to enjoy.

connecting flight in Atlanta – 8 hours – worth leaving airport?

is there anything I can do in Atlanta (land at 1.30pm and catch connecting flight at 10pm), or will it take too long to go through immigration and get back into the airport?

PS, i havent booked these flights yet, I’m flying from London LHR to Buenos Aires BUE and the cheapest flights i can see are on Delta Airlines via ATL

Knowing Atlanta’s airport, if you are scheduled for an 8 hour stopover you will be there for at least 12. Not sure what there is to do but I would avoid Atlanta’s airport if you could. Forbes rated it as one of “America’s most time draining airports”

cheap flights to sydney australia?

so i’m looking for the cheapest way to get from minneapolis, mn to sydney, australia in november or december. all the prices i’ve looked at so far have been like $1900+ for roundtrip. this seems rather pricey.
is this a reasonable? are there cheaper ways to get there? good dates to travel? maybe flying into another australian city and then taking a train/bus to sydney?

any advice? no generic travel websites please unless its really something special.

i’m trying to use northwest airlines because i have a $500 credit there.

I’d check Air New Zealand for your international flight – try to get your domestic through northwest (should be easy with your credit) and then look into ANZ for the LA – SYD flight. It connects via Aukland NZ. I just bought tickets in Nov/Dec for this year for $1425 AUD per ticket plus taxes – worked out to just over $3000 US for 1 adult and two kids. The ANZ website is easy to use and has a price guarrantee.

I don’t think any of the NW partners do a good US – Sydney route. Korean Air is all via Korea, and I don’t know that they codeshare with NW for those flights anyway.
